Narcissistic Abuse Series
By Susan Adeyemi, Counsellor, & Author

What are the impacts of Narcissistic Abuse?
Narcissistic abuse reaches far beyond emotional pain, it impacts every area of your being. Physically, your body remains in a constant state of stress. The result can be fatigue, sleep disturbances, and a weakened immune system. Your body begins to live in “survival mode,” always alert, always bracing for the next emotional blow.
Survivors may withdraw from loved ones or develop people-pleasing tendencies to avoid further conflict.

Psychologically, victims often experience anxiety, depression, or emotional numbness. You might feel detached from yourself or struggle to concentrate. Simple decisions feel overwhelming because your confidence has been systematically eroded. The mind becomes clouded, leaving you vulnerable to further manipulation.
Behaviourally, survivors may withdraw from loved ones or develop people-pleasing tendencies to avoid further conflict. These aren’t signs of weakness; they are trauma responses, ways your mind and body learned to survive in unsafe emotional environments.

Healing requires understanding that these reactions are normal outcomes of prolonged psychological harm. With compassion, therapy, and time, your nervous system can recalibrate and your identity can be restored.
As we continue this series, I invite you to reflect:

2) What part of this resonated with you?
- Reflect on each part by writing in your journal.
