Narcissistic Abuse Series
By Susan Adeyemi, Counsellor, & Author

What are the signs of Narcissistic Abuse?
Recognising narcissistic behaviour is essential for breaking free from its grip. Narcissists thrive on control, admiration, and power. They seek to dominate conversations, diminish your emotions, and subtly reframe every interaction to serve their self-image. What makes this so insidious is the charm they use to disguise their control as care.
You might find yourself constantly apologising or second-guessing your words. You may walk on eggshells to avoid triggering their anger or withdrawal. Gaslighting, where your experiences are denied until you question your own sanity, is one of their most powerful tools. It leaves you unsure of what’s real and who you can trust, including yourself.
The moment you can name what’s happening, you reclaim part of your power.

Narcissists often present two faces: one that the world admires and another that you experience in private. In public, they may appear generous, attentive, or even spiritual. In private, they’re cold, dismissive, or cruel. This inconsistency keeps victims emotionally trapped, hoping that the public version will reappear at home.
The moment you can name what’s happening, you reclaim part of your power. Awareness doesn’t fix everything overnight, but it gives you the clarity needed to make safer, stronger choices.
